Startup time
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:25:53 AM »
Hi

My MacBookPro 2011 needs with Photo Mechanic Version 5.0, build 17338 (df27633) 43 seconds to open a 20 Images Folder That's unusual long. What could cause this slowness?

43 seconds before any images appear?

Does the status bar at the bottom of the window say anything while this is going on?

Do you have any network drives (and if so, are they listed in your sidebar)

Do you have any network drives that are mounted but are off-line?  If they're still mounted then when PM asks them for their directory information there will either be a lengthy timeout, or the drive will come back on-line and respond.  Both results can take a long time to finish.

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic log.  In Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

OK, nothing obvious.  Let's turn on some additional logging.  I have attached a file called PMDebug.txt that you should download and place in Photo Mechanic's preferences folder.  On the Mac you can get there easily by using the Go to Folder... command on the Go menu in the Finder.  Enter the following as the path:

~/Library/Preferences/com.camerabits.PhotoMechanic

Place the PMDebug.txt file there.  Then quit and relaunch PM.  Then in Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Wow! great, seems to work again as I'm used to. After the debugging and a newstart of the MBP it is good again. Thank you very much Kirk!

i have the same problem ... at least 60 seconds before Ingest starts, and then Ingest is painfully slow. When i attach an external HD or use Finder i don't have this problem....  can i also use this debug file?

Please remove (or rename) the PMDebug.txt file or your PM log file will get larger over time.

Thanks,

It doesn't sound like your problem is the same as Dominik's.  His has to do with starting up PM itself.  Yours occurs when you use Ingest.

Please send me a screenshot of your Ingest dialog prior to starting an everyday Ingest operation.  I'd like to see your settings.

Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshot.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Tom,

here are my ingest settings attached ... thanks

How long does it take to bring up the Ingest dialog itself?
I see no disks listed.  How do you normally begin an Ingest?
When you ingest from a disk, is it always a camera card?
Does the disk you're ingesting from have a large number of files on it?
What build of Photo Mechanic 5 are you running?  You can see this in the About box.
