1dx II and CFAST not deleting images
« on: June 01, 2016, 02:43:50 PM »
Hi Guys,

We have our ingest system setup to delete disks when done. Works fine with previous cameras and compact flash. But with the Canon 1dx Mark II and Cfast it is not deleting the images.

thoughts?

Scott

In the filesystem, does your user account have the ability to delete files on the card?  If not, then PM won't be able to delete the files.

Hi Kirk,

I'm running Mac OS 10.11.14, I've never had to assign permissions to camera cards before. Are you saying the OS is recognizing the cfast as hard drives? I supposed they are just tiny SSD's.  So, I will need to assign permission to every single one?

All camera cards when mounted via a card reader are actual disk drives to the OS (and to PM).

The reason I asked you if you have permission to delete files on the disk is because if you can't delete files then neither can PM.  Have you tried dragging an item from your CFast card to the Trash and then emptying the Trash?  Does it work?

Hi Kirk,

I just dragged 38gb off the disk and into the trash. Deleted with no problem.

Good.  OK, the other reason Ingest won't delete files when it is directed to do so is when there were errors copying files.  Did any errors occur during the Ingest?

No errors, multiple cards, both Sandisk and Lexar, just plain doesn't delete them. Stick a CF in and in deletes fine.

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic log.  In Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Any one of those could have stopped the erase.  No messages like the following appeared in the Ingest Tasks dialog?:

Warning: Not erasing volume EOS_DIGITAL because there were errors.
Warning: One or more files on volume EOS_DIGITAL could not be erased.
Warning: Not erasing volume EOS_DIGITAL, because it contains system files or is not a removable volume.

I'm going to have to give you an updated build containing some additional logging in it.  Are you willing to test and report back the log file like you did earlier?

Thanks,

-Kirk

I had the same issue with the 1dxM2 and Cfast.. PM would not delete any files after ingest as it normally would... (mac 10.11.4 or 5)

Hey are you all using the SanDisk reader and having these problems?  We seem to be doing OK using a Lexar CR1 "Professional Workflow" reader (which is the slower/cheaper USB 3.0 only version, not the CR2 that also supports Thunderbolt).

Any way you can try a different CFast reader (hopefully a well-recognized brand)?

UPDATE:

If you are using the "SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast 2.0 Reader" then the MacOS thinks the card is non-removable (i.e. a hard drive) and this prevents PM from deleting files during Ingest.  Buy a Lexar CFast reader instead  Better yet, format the card in the camera!  This is what ALL camera manufacturers recommend and so do we.  At a minimum you should format a new card IMMEDIATELY in your camera before ever taking any photos with it.

HTH...

So is it a MAC OS issue or a Sandisk issue?
