Unable to set ratings on external drive
« on: December 05, 2016, 02:46:26 AM »
PM 5 build 17719 running on OSX El Capitan.

Recently, I have been unable to set ratings on photos located on an external Lacie drive. As far as I can tell I have full Read & Write permissions to the disk and folders. When opening files in PS, xmp files are correctly saved alongside the original raw files.

Ratings are working as expected with local files.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jarle

Jarle,

Please try this older build: http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=10453.0

Regrettably, same issue with build 17671.

What file system is on the external drive?

What file system is on the external drive?

Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Running some more tests, I can see that the xmp file is indeed written to disk when assigning a rating, but the rating is not visually displayed below the thumbnail. This test was done with build 17719.

<x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="XMP Core 5.1.2">
 <rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#">
  <rdf:Description rdf:about=""
    xmlns:xmp="http://ns.adobe.com/xap/1.0/"
    xmlns:photoshop="http://ns.adobe.com/photoshop/1.0/"
    xmlns:photomechanic="http://ns.camerabits.com/photomechanic/1.0/"
    xmlns:aux="http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/"
   xmp:CreatorTool="NIKON D4 Ver.1.10 "
   xmp:CreateDate="2016-03-08T09:06:04.70"
   xmp:Rating="4"
   photoshop:DateCreated="2016-03-08T09:06:04.70"
   photomechanic:ColorClass="0"
   photomechanic:Tagged="False"
   photomechanic:Prefs="0:0:4:004522"
   photomechanic:PMVersion="PM5"
   aux:ImageNumber="4522"/>
 </rdf:RDF>
</x:xmpmeta>

UPDATE: Another strange thing: testing on a different folder on the same drive, ratings are displayed correctly. Seems random - works with some folders, not with others. All folders have Read & Write privileges. Seems like the issue is related to reading the xmp files and/or updating the thumbnail view.

Try doing something more with the images that don't show the ratings.  Set a caption.  Does the caption persist (close PM and open it again)?

Same thing. Caption is correctly saved in xmp file, but is not visible within PM. A restart doesn't change anything. As if the xmp file isn't read at all.

Another test: entered a headline in the iptc dialog, clicked ok. Headline is correctly written to xmp file. Opened iptc dialog again, headline is gone. Entered a caption, clicked ok. Caption is correctly written to xmp file, but headline is gone (in the xmp file).

I suspect that the folders that exhibit this behavior have permissions (likely Access Control Lists) that allow writing but disallow reading.  You'll have to correct this permissions problem on your disk.

Is this different from the privileges found under Sharing & Permissions in the folder's info dialog (cmd+i)? According to this, I have Read & Write privileges for the folders in question. Any suggestions on how to proceed from here?

I suggest comparing the permissions of one folder where everything works against the one(s) that don't work.  Feel free to post JPEG screenshots of the "Get Info" panels of the folders so I can see them.

Thanks,

See attached file. First (left) folder: no problems adding ratings and captions. Second folder: problem as described above. Exact same permissions.

I also tried to change all users to Read & Write - didn't change anything. Also, other applications are able to read the PM xmp files, even if PM itself will not read them (apparently). A caption added in PM will display correctly when opening the image in Photoshop.

Jarle,

Can you post a directory listing of the 2016-03-10_sola folder please?  You can do this by opening a Terminal window and then typing the following (add an additional space after)

ls -al

Then drag and drop the 2016-03-10_sola folder onto the Terminal window (it will paste in the full path to the folder for you) then press enter.  Copy and paste the output in your reply.

Thanks,

-Kirk

This has been driving me crazy, but I have finally found the problem. In my opinion, it's a bug:

I usually shoot NEF+JPEG. Setting ratings works fine. Once in a while, I delete the superfluous JPEG files (only raw files and edited JPEGs are permanently archived). Having deleted the JPEGs, ratings do no longer work.
