Unable to CR2 Files After PM
« on: April 25, 2017, 04:39:43 PM »
I am still testing PM and have run into a weird issue.
PM 18327 on Windows 10.

I can open CR2 files in explorer into the Photos app and see preview thumbnails off the cards from my camera, I can open CR2 files from previous sessions with Lightroom and see previews, but all of the files I have ingested with PM will not open or preview. I get the following error: "We can't open this file."

The images do display fine in PM and Lightroom, but it's really annoying to not see the thumbnail previews like other images.

Anyone else see this issue?

If you have set PM to embed metadata into your RAW files, some programs may not be compatible.  Use XMP sidecar files instead (Hint: use the Adobe settings in the IPTC/XMP settings snapshot--the Lightning bolt button).

You can revert any metadata embedding that PM has done by using the "Revert TIFF-based RAW to original" command on the Tools menu:

http://wiki.camerabits.com/en/index.php/User_Manual_Flat_View#Revert_TIFF-based_RAW_to_original:

The safest way to work with RAW files is to use an XMP sidecar to store the metadata.  The downside is that you'll have extra files ending in .XMP alongside your RAW files.

Kirk,

You rock. The tools menu fixed it. The thing I am confused by is I did create the sidecar files.

What setting are you referring to exactly. In Preferences I have:
When writing IPTC/XMP:
checked - Add embedded IPTC (XMP will always be written)

For TIFF-based RAW files:
checked - Allow RAW files to be modified
unchecked - Add embedded metadata
checked - Always create and/or update XMP sidecar files

Is the first one the one to uncheck?

The first two should be unchecked.  (The Adobe settings on the snapshot menu will fix this for you.)

Sorry, I am brand new to PM. I don't see an "Adobe Settings" or a "Snapshot" menu. Are you talking about Preferences | IPTC/XMP Settings?

I now have:
unchecked - Add embedded IPTC (XMP will always be written)

For TIFF-based RAW files:
unchecked - Allow RAW files to be modified
unchecked - Add embedded metadata
checked - Always create and/or update XMP sidecar files

Am I losing any functionality by changing these? My workflow has always been Lightroom plus Photoshop when necessary, but mostly Lightroom, so the sidecar files don't bother me.

More information can be found in PM's online manual...Adobe Settings

Thanks! I have no idea what those lightning bolts are for.

When I use the Adobe option it checks "Add embedded IPTC (XMP will always be written)" is that correct?

In all honesty, I set my preferences many many years ago (before the snapshot presets were added to PM) and haven't revised them since.  :-[

You can read more in depth explanations in the online manual - specifically...IPTC/XMP Preferences (something I really must do!).

Hopefully Kirk or someone else will give you an intelligent answer.  ;)

Thanks for the honesty!  ;)

Since I am over the initial issue, I'll spend a bit of time experimenting.

Thanks All!

That's correct.  It won't affect your CR2 files.

Notice it says "For JPEG, TIFF, PSD, DNG photos:".  CR2 files are TIFF-based RAW files which has another set of settings for writing (below).
