Open folders and not subfolders

You haven't provided much information, not enough to suggest a solution.  How are you opening the folders?  From the Open command on the File menu?  Drag and drop from the Finder?  From the Navigator?  Favorites?

Please tell me how you're opening your folders and what keys (if any) you have held down at the time you're opening the folder.
