Lag time when tagging

As a new user, I'm noticing a distinct lag time when trying to tag images or advance. Sometimes I end up hitting T or the right arrow 3 times before any action happens. I downloaded an update today with no change. I'm running 10.12.5 Sierra on a maxed out 2016 MBP. Files are NEFs from a 24Mp D750. Not sure why the lag every 10-12 photos..? I couldn't find anything searching the forum.

Where are the photos stored?  What kind of photos are you working with?  What other programs are you running at the same time as PM?
