Unresponsive PM5
« on: January 15, 2018, 01:58:52 AM »
I am having problems with unresponsive PM 5.0 (build 19094) 12cba6f. At times it becomes unresponsive and crashes forcing me to use task manager to shut it down and re start.
When I used it this am task manager reported PM5 using 34% CPU and 51% memory.
Disk cache is on drive M: which is a 500Mb internal drive with 465 GB free space.

PM5 preferences are:
Disk cache = 2048 MB
Reserve at least 1024 MB
Empty disk cache on exit is ticked.
Memory cache = 800MB

OS is AMD Athlon 11 x 4 640 processor 3.00 Ghz
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit on 64 bit processor.
RAM = 8GB

Suspect that my preferences setting may be the issue?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suggest at the very least setting your Memory Cache down to 256MB.  I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic log.  In Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Frank,

Unfortunately there is no indication as to what the cause of the hangs are.  I can see instances of termination in the log, but nothing out of the ordinary was being logged at that time.

During what kinds of operations are you finding PM to be unresponsive?

What kinds of images are you working with?  What kind of storage are they located?
What sort method are you using in the Contact Sheet?

Hi Kirk, think I have figured out the problem, purely by accident!

I am using the Open folders and sub folders in a new contact sheet which I am finding very useful. I suspect that I am not giving my OS the time to complete the task and I also suspect I may be asking too much of it.

When I open my main drive (C:\photography) in PM I have 8095 images selected and a total of 14823.

Think I need to rethink how I am using PM. At present I am working on images over 3 drives (including C:) which have become a bit of an admin nightmare.

Does this make sense?

Yes.  You're going to be better off browsing individual folders rather than an entire hierarchy like that.

Thanks Kirk, really appreciate the first class support you guys/gals provide.

One last quick question. I have fitted a new SSD drive which is my C: drive. Would there be any benefit to making the PM cache location on the C: drive?
