Search by file type on Mac
« on: December 11, 2018, 08:52:40 PM »
Photo Mechanic Version 5.0, build 19720 (f9d08d8)
OS 10.11.6

I'm having issues searching by file type. Here's what I've tried:

NEF or TIF or JPG results in all file types being shown, it does not single out the specific file type I searched for.
NNEF or TIFF returns no results at all.
JPEG works.
.nef or .tif or .jpg returns no results at all.
.nnef or .tiff or .jpeg results in all file types being shown.

Couldn't find anything about searching by file type in the online manual. Am I doing something wrong or...?
Thanks.

Can you show me what your Find panel looks like with your query shown?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshot.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Hi Kirk,
I made a folder with a few mixed file types to test. Each screenshot shows the search query I used and the results of that query.
Cheers.

Ah, you're using the Spotlight-powered search.  It doesn't work well for all file types apparently.

I'd suggest searching for Filename, Ends with, Exact, TIFF

(Replace TIFF with other extensions that you're looking for.)

While were on this topic, is there a way to search by color class or star rating?

Yeah, I mostly use the Search function as opposed to Find as I'm often searching across multiple folders.

I just assumed FILENAME - ENDS WITH would only look at the filename. I didn't realize it also looked at the extension. Your suggestion will work perfectly then.
Many thanks!

I don't think you can using the Search function or the Find function, but I know of 2 other methods:

1. From within an open contact sheet you can go under the Edit menu to "Select Color Class" or "Select Rating".
2. You can select which color class or star rating to hide/view using the buttons at the bottom right corner of the contact sheet window.

I know you can do this in contact sheet but was hoping for a way to search multiple folders.

Note that you can open multiple folders in a single Contact Sheet. Rt-click or control click on a folder in the Navigator to add to current contact sheet.  (You can also save that grouped Contact Sheet in Favorites if you want to look at it often. ) That way you can use all the Contact Sheet tools.
