RAW file support for Canon EOS R
« on: October 26, 2018, 03:56:40 AM »
Hi PM Staff,
It would be great if PM could support the new raw files from the Canon EOS R.
Currently there aren't thumbnails, previews, I can't rename, caption etc.
Using PM 5, build 19695, on mac osx 10.13.1.
Thanks,

We will be putting out a PM5 build soon that supports Canon CR3 RAW files.

Hi Ryan,

I wanted to send you an update that we have just released a new build of Photo Mechanic 5 that includes support for Canon CR3 RAW files.

You can download and install the new version by going to *Help > Software Update > Check Now* from inside Photo Mechanic 5; or by going to www.camerabits.com/downloads and clicking on the link for the version that matches your computer's operating system.

You can also read the features added to this build in the announcement on the Camera Bits forum at http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=11634.0.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much, this made my day! Love the Canon EOS R but the workflow was a bit of a problem without Photo Mechanic. Keep up the good work!

Just curious about Raw files and supporting them in programs such as PM...

Is there anything substantially different between say a CR2 Raw vs. a CR3 Raw other than the name? That is are they encoded differently or is it more just adding the CR3 name and version number to an internal list in PM so that it will be recognized and processed by your Canon Raw decoding code?

The file formats are massively different.  CR2 is roughly a TIFF file just like so many other RAW formats.  CR3 is an ISOBMF file (ISO base media file format) which is more akin to a quicktime movie container.

I downloaded the updated version of PM 5 right after the release and it worked like a charm. Thank you very much for the fast and excellent integration of "CR3" files.
You guys from Camera Bits have been doing a very good job for a long time!
Other software companies working in the photo business just start thinking about updating their programs in the (unknown) future...
