Actuations

I have the actuations variable active and have no problem with it working with my Nikons bu a friend asked me to check the shutter count on a Canon 6D (a card with a few .cr2 files) and the Actuations comes up blank while everything else is filled in. I'm using a MacBook Pro with Mojave but also checked it on an older MacBook Pro with Sierra and same result. Any ideas?

Canon has made it impossible for applications like Photo Mechanic to read the actuation count in their newer cameras.
