Very bad performance with PM6 on Mojave
« on: March 25, 2019, 05:35:24 AM »
Found a really huge problem:

If you jump to the next photo in preview using your keyboard arrow keys, it takes some time to react, in Version 5 this was instant. I find this crucial, there must be no delay between keyboard presses and selection changes, or otherwise your workflow gets disrupted.

Just try to hit left/right/left/right very fast in PM5 and it keeps up perfectly all the time. In PM6 you can do that and watch the preview catch up for a few seconds after you stop pressing any buttons.

Didn't expect such a massive performance drop in PM6 – I hope this bug gets fixed soon, the desctiption said it was supposed to be faster than PM5, not way slower?

By the way – the ENTIRE INTERFACE seems to be very laggy. Every single button press takes a little time before it actually reacts or a dialog box actually appears. Was PM6 not natively developed for the mac and uses a slow emulator or anything? The glitch from the screenshot suggests so.

Thanks,
Matthias

During development and all of our beta testing we had one person that PM6 performed slowly as you describe.  We were never able to reproduce this decrease in speed or lagging UI responsiveness on our systems.

I'm sure we'll figure it out soon.

The application is definitely native, written in Objective-C++ for the great majority of the code.

The UI ugliness you showed is because you have full keyboard navigation turned on and it doesn't work well with our custom UI code.

We don't know yet if the issue is related to the macOS version or not.  We have tested on 10.10 and higher and PM6 is substantially faster than PM5 on all of the hardware and OSes that we've tested on.

But some people are experiencing severely degraded performance.

Not my experience at all. PM6 is a speed demon!

One more here. Performance is like the early versions of Lightroom when browsing images.

Attatched PM log and computer specs.

Same here..  the preview window is really slow flicking left or right through images..  it feels like it's rendering the RAW files each time..  I've disabled RAW rendering, but it's still really slow..
In PM5, you could hit the Q button to switch RAW rendering on or off..  seems to be missing from PM6 - (when I tested the same folder in PM5 and hit 'Q' on a few images, they show up with [RAW] next to them in PM6, but I've got no way to disable that in PM6...)

My system is iMac 27" 5K Retina 2017
4.2ghz Intel Core i7
64GB RAM - DDR4
Radeon Pro 580 with 8gb video RAM

205gb free space on my hard drive...  Should be plenty fast enough..  PM5 is still noticably faster.
iMac 27" 5K Retina 2017 -  4.2ghz 64gb RAM 1Tb HD, OSX Mojave
MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max 24 core GPU, 2Tb SSD, 64gb RAM

Same issue here. PM6 is currently unusable for me. I have tested with other applications open as well as after a fresh boot with no other applications open with the same slow result.
