Another newbie question on catalogue
« on: April 28, 2019, 05:56:27 AM »
Hi,
What is the difference between Browsing and Filtering in PM6? They seem identical.
Is it possible to browse/filter by two categories at the same time, for example location and model or a certain keyword and capture time?
If so, how can I do it?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
- Luiz Muzzi

Luiz,

What is the difference between Browsing and Filtering in PM6? They seem identical.

Browse is a tree that shows you everything that the Catalog knows about, metadata-wise.  Filter is a stack of criteria that helps you narrow down what you're interested in seeing.

Is it possible to browse/filter by two categories at the same time, for example location and model or a certain keyword and capture time?

Filter, yes.  Browse, no.

In the Filter tab, you'll see (by default, a single filter 'stage' or criteria) usually a 5-star filter.  It should have a button on the right of its header with a '+' (plus symbol) on it.  Clicking it will add a new filter stage which act as an "AND" criteria for the overall filter.  On its header is a popup menu button.  Clicking on it will reveal a list of all of the available criteria to use to narrow your search.  Selecting one will change that criteria to the chosen criteria.

Selecting one or more items in a filter stage will be an "OR" of each of those terms (which would expand or widen the criteria of that filter stage).

Does that help?

Hi Luiz,

The two are quite different, but also indeed quite alike ;D

The biggest difference is that filtering allows you to add multiple clauses together operating with "AND" logic (in the future we will likely see "OR" as well, also not that within each clause, the sub items are again OR-ed) to narrow down the selection of items shown. The browser on the other hand is showing you things as the union of all selected clauses.

Currently I actually see myself using the browser most, but with e.g. smart collections/saved filters, this will likely change quickly.

Also see Kirks answer.

Click on the minus (-) button on the header of the Filter that you want to remove.  See the attached screenshot, the button is outlined in red.

I don't think the minus sign works in that dialog. You just have choose another filter or change the rating to "None". I'm also finding the minus sign is always inoperative.

The minus sign never appears to be active on the first filter when that is shown alone. However, if you use the plus sign to add a second filter the minus sign becomes active on the first filter (and is also active on the second filter).

Yes. I understand I have to go to Browser and click on the top of files to remove filter. Not really easy.

It really helped a lot, Kirk and Hayo.
I can now use two or more filters at the same time...it is really fantastic. And also two or more items in a filter stage.
Thanks a lot.

Could you tell me what you're trying to achieve?  If I knew what your goal was, then I could suggest how to do it.

In the search field, enter "" (two double-quotes)
