slow performance after opening large folder
« on: July 29, 2019, 12:28:30 AM »
Hi guys,

opening an folder with for example 100 images take pretty long to load since after opening the folder PM6 starts sorting all the files.
So when opening an folder with 2000 images it takes forever and is really a big difference if you compare it with PM5.

Is there a way I can disable this sorting since this take too much time?

sorry forgot to mention... when a large folder is opened and you switch to another program and then switch back to PM6, you will get an beach ball and have to wait for a while before you can start working again with the software :(

The problem is caused by PM rescanning the folder(s) after a application change. It does that to be able to recognize any changes made to files (outside PM). Both PM5 and PM6 do this, but the way (when) sorting results are shown is different. Overall PM6 should actually be faster, but the new method has some drawbacks too (Kirk should be able to explain this way better, I think).

What sorting method do you use? Filename is fastest and should be on par with PM5. File modification is also quite fast, but most other require the file to be analysed for metadata and that always causes a delay, so sticking to filename is usually the best.

Thanks Hayo for you reply. I always use creation time since I work with multiple camera's on weddings. Indeed filename is much quicker... but using Capture time never had any issues

You mean it's slower than before? In my experience it should be about equal. I just tested this with a folder with almost 4400 raw files; sorting times were quite the same!

ow that is strange... over here it takes a few minuts before I can even do anything... and switching between other software and back gives the same waiting time.
With 5 this was never the case at all

What device are your images on? Have you also tried the exact same thing (same folders, same sorting, etc.) in PM5?

So I finally had the time to do the testing. What I found out:

- I set sorting to Capture time
- PM5 is slower when opening an folder with images
- PM5 sorts before showing any photos
- PM6 show photo's much faster
- PM6 start sorting after showing all images. When sorting is busy the software is really slow.

Is there a way to show images after sorting is complete with PM6?
