double click

I used to double click a thumbnail and it opened up to preview then double click the preview to go back to the thumbnail. For some reason this has stopped and i have to close each preview by the x button. What do i need to do to get it to work as it used to please?

Perhaps this setting in Preferences got toggled off?

Under Edit/Preview
  Double-click previews, Control-double-click edits.
