Exported jpgs unreadable in Luminar
« on: August 10, 2020, 03:00:07 PM »
Hello,

I am using Luminar now and I realized it couldn't see my Photo Mechanic exported jpegs. I export my 16-bit tiffs to jpeg for final polish in Luminar. Their support replied with this message:

Our technical department has found the reason Luminar cannot open the file - NW-060520-276.jpg.

The EXIF data shows that the file's width and height are set to zero.

Exif Image Width        : 0
Exif Image Height.      : 0

Luminar can only open images with a minimum resolution of 256 x 256 pixels.

I'd recommend contacting Photo Mechanic support team regarding the issue.

Can any other software read these exported JPEG files, like the operating system you are using?

A sample file would be appreciated.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG sample.

Yes, others seem to be able to read them.  Although I had them rejected by eBay too, maybe that was on their end. My workaround is to open them in Bridge and re-export them.

I'll attach a file, thank you for your help.

Our JPEG save does not write these Exif tags because they are optional for JPEGs.  According to the Exif specification, the tags image width and image "length" (height) have this comment:

"In JPEG compressed data a JPEG marker is used instead of this data."

It is the JPEG marker that truly defines the size of the JPEG.  Exif data is not required in any JPEG.

I can certainly add these fields as apparently Luminar is not following the spec.  You might want to bring this up with them.  Next build will have this feature.  I don't consider this to be a bug in Photo Mechanic.
