Catalog and backup disks
« on: December 03, 2020, 05:59:59 AM »
PM+ beginnerĀ“s question:

I store my files on an external drive with is regularly backed up.
If I have the database on the main computer and I attach the backup
drive, will the database recognise the path to the new drive. ?
In short: The recommended (detailed please) procedure for maintaining database integrity with external drives while doing regular backups of those drives?

Thanks

Tom

I'm not sure I quite understand your scenario.  This is how I understand what you're saying:

You have your catalog on an internal drive.  You have an external drive with photos on it that you have added to your catalog.  You have another drive that you use to backup the first external drive.  And then you're wondering if you can substitute the backup drive in place of the first external drive and have the catalog recognize it?

Yes Kirk that`s my situation. I have the photo files on an external drive that is regularly backed up to another external drive. The catalog files are on my internal disk. I am looking for the bedst backup pratice.

Another question: Can I backup the PM+ catalog files by just copying them ?

I have been using PM since 2011 and am very pleased with this update.

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

I expect that to work, though you should only be using your catalog with only one of the two drives active (mounted) at a time.  Photo Mechanic Plus should not be running when you backup or swap disks (or restore).

Another question: Can I backup the PM+ catalog files by just copying them ?

Yes, that should work.  You should make sure that Photo Mechanic Plus is not running during the backup or restore.

That's good to hear.

Thanks,
