Colour tag issue
« on: June 16, 2021, 07:39:06 AM »
I use PM with Capture One.

I set up a session with Cap 1 and then ingest with PM.

I cull, metadata, headline and keyword in PM

I then go to the Cap 1 capture folder to start editing and every image has a yellow colour tag, always and always every image.

I never assign a colour tag in PM, that is always done in Cap 1, if at all.

If I ingest images directly into Cap 1 bypassing PM there is never a colour tag, all is as it should be.

Any ideas please my learned colleagues?

P.S. Photo Mechanic Version 6.0, build 5820 (a6fdfbc)

Thanks
Simon.

What kind of images does your camera produce?  Can you share an edited image (with XMP sidecar file if present)?

Thanks,

I do not see any XMP files Kirk, how do I see them?  Not computer savvy. :(

Go look at the pictures in the folder in the Finder (macOS) or Windows Explorer (on Windows).  If there are XMP files, they should be in the same folder as the image and will have the same base filename (the first part of the file name not counting the extension).

Simon,

Got ya thanks. :)  Here they are

None of them specify a color label.  Have you tried asking the Capture One folks why they're showing a yellow color label?

Note: since you didn't share an image and only the XMP sidecar file, I cannot say whether your images have embedded XMP metadata that specifies a color label.  If you'd like to provide one, I'd be happy to investigate further.

Tried to attach a couple but they won't load.
Can I email them to you?
I have Kirk but they don't seem to know.  What made me think it could be PM is when I ingest directly to the Cap One Capture folder I do not get a colour tag.

Thanks
Simon.

Simon,

Thanks for the sample CR2 RAW file.  It does have embedded XMP (from the camera, not modified by PM) and it only contains a rating value.

I have no idea why their software would show a yellow label for images that have an updated/created XMP sidecar file, but I can tell you that neither the XMP sidecar file nor the CR2 file specifies a color label.

Have you given them one of your RAW files and the XMP sidecar file for analysis?

...What made me think it could be PM is when I ingest directly to the Cap One Capture folder I do not get a colour tag.

1 Start C1 (keep PM closed)
2 Set (or observe) a yellow label on an image in C1
3 Make C1 write metadata to a sidecar xmp (Metadata tool (the "i") -> three dot menu -> Sync Metadata)
4 Open the sidecar file in a text editor and find <xmp:Label>Yellow</xmp:Label>
5 Close text editor, close C1.
6 Start PM and navigate to image. Observe yellow label (expected)
7 Make PM cange label from yellow to blue
8 Close PM
9 Open the sidcar file in the text editor and find xmp:Label="Blue"
10 Close text editor
11 Start C1
12 If C1 shows yellow label (My C1 must do that) then
13 Make C1 reload metadata (Metadata tool-> three dot menu -> Reload Metadata)
14 C1 should present the blue label

You may have to experiment a little with your C1 Preferences.
Some people like to run C1 with "Auto Sync Sidecar XMP" set to "Full Sync" in contrast to my "None" setting (see attached screen snippet). Full sync can be a resource hog, but it will automate the important steps in the above.

I do all metadata work in PM+, but I occasionally want to see updated metadata in C1. In C1 browser I do Ctrl + A  (select all, in Windows), then Metadata tool -> three dot menu -> Reload Metadata. I have practiced this since more or less continuously since C1 v7

Once you get the steps outlined above to work, you can start tuning preferences to your liking, preferring one metadata source over another, doing auto sync or auto reload or both (full sync).

My C1 (v20) Preferences are as shown in the attached image.

Edited to add: Metadata tool operates on selected image, click on the thumbnail before executing steps 3 and 13.

Hi Odd,

Got as far as step 5 and all good.

When I reopened PM there was no colour tag showing.
I tagged the image blue, shut PM and opened up the xmp in text editor (step 9)  but it was still showing yellow.

I must be doing something wrong. :)

Thank you for your time and help.
Simon.

Hmm, strange.
I attach an image showing my PM+ preferences. There may be a potential gotcha with that raw+jpeg option, but probably not. It ain't worth much in your situation; but I just verified that the step-wise procedure works for me, and I never do the application close/reopen steps, I just switch between C1 and PM but making sure to do the C1 Metadata Sync/Reload. My raw files are Nikon .NEFs but that is hardly relevant. The only thing I can think of is no write access to the files involved, but then C1 and PM should let you know

Sorry about not being able to help.

Here is a good one!  ;D

Loaded 6 images into PM and assigned them an orange colour, no particular reason apart from it wasn't yellow!

In Cap 1 they were yellow!  :(

I have just noticed this ... the label button appears to be depressed constantly.  When I try to click on it, I get no response, no options are shown.

Could this have a bearing?

It's disabled because you have the "Synchronize Color Class with IPTC/XMP Label" checkbox in the General page of the Preferences dialog checked.  You can uncheck that but while it will make it possible to have the Label field and the Color Class value differ, it won't solve your issue.

The reason I say this is that your Label field is blank and you have the synchronization turned on.  If Photo Mechanic was expressing a Yellow color label, it would have the word Yellow (or whatever word you assigned to the yellow Color Class) in that field.
