Problems with Search

I'm having problems with things like this...

Searching for "gps is empty" does not work.

Searching for a "collection" is case sensitive.

Searching for a nested collection is impossible or undocumented.

Searching for Digital Source Type  is impossible or undocumented.

Am I misunderstanding what is currently possible?

True, not currently supported.

Searching for a "collection" is case sensitive.

Yes, I have tested this just now.  Collection searches are case-sensitive.

Searching for a nested collection is impossible or undocumented.

I am able to search sub-collections.

collection Alaska/2011
collection 2011

Both worked for me.  The first one is specific to the 2011 sub-collection in the Alaska collection.  The second one is less-specific and would return results for any collection path that has a component that contains '2011'.

Searching for Digital Source Type  is impossible or undocumented.

Correct, that data is not searchable currently.

Am I misunderstanding what is currently possible?

The only searchable fields are those listed in the Searchable Fields window.  Catalog->Searchable Fields... will show the window listing the available terms.

Correction: there are additional things that can be searched, see the Search Examples window (I noticed that 'collection' is there with an example.)

True, not currently supported.

Thank you Kirk.

This works: collection Fine Art/Line Art
This does not: collection "Fine Art"/"Line Art"
Isn't this inconsistent with other searches?

I very much look forward to being able to search on the other tags I mentioned and perhaps all tags sometime later.

Bye-the-way.  I've written up in detail on how I moved from LR which others may find helpful.  On which sub-forum should I post it, or should I PM a copy to you first?

I can see how you would see it that way.  The slash is part of the path to the Line Art sub-collection.  This should work:

collection "Fine Art/Line Art"

When you put quotes around terms, you're telling the search system that you want an exact match and not a sub-string match.  The full string of characters for that sub-collection is: Fine Art/Line Art

Two quoted strings with a slash in between will never match any collection.

I very much look forward to being able to search on the other tags I mentioned and perhaps all tags sometime later.

Probably not likely.  Some are very obscure and have limited value vs. the time they add to the indexing process.

If you'd like my feedback on it prior to posting, send me a personal message with a link to the article/document.  Otherwise, feel free to post it where you like.

Michael,

Not sure if this helps ... one can display {gps} below the thumbnail on the contact sheet and then create a custom 'sort by' {gps}. In both cases, the images without GPS data will show a 0 vs a 1

Preferences -> Contact Sheet -> Labels ->
I use Filename + two labels
Label 1:  {day} {mnn3} {year4}; gps {gps}
Label 2: {city}, {country}

Contact Sheet -> sort by 'custom' -> Edit Custom
Primary: {GPS}
And then change name to Sort by {gps}

Then it is straightforward to select all the '0' files.

If I don't have the GPS information, I can then easily see which photos to add some information e.g. city and country

Thank you Peter.  I hadn't discovered the custom search feature.

Michael,

Problems with Search

I'm having problems with things like this...

Searching for "gps is empty" does not work.

In the next build of Photo Mechanic Plus, it will work.  I implemented it yesterday afternoon.
