Offline images not viewable in catalog
« on: May 05, 2022, 12:22:27 PM »
First off, thanks for the program. I know you guys work hard on it.

I'm diving into PM+, slowly getting the hang of it. I have an external HD with approx. 300gb of photos. I cataloged it but upon removing the HD I can only see some of the previews. All have the yellow dot. This issue seems similar to this post).

Below are the screen grabs where an image is viewable and where one isn't, like the above post.

If they're offline, they will have the yellow catalog status indicator.  This much is expected.

Below are the screen grabs where an image is viewable and where one isn't.

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic Plus log.  In Photo Mechanic Plus go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Thanks for the log.  If you make that drive online, can you view that image without failure?  (Or any of the others that don't show up properly when they're online?)

When the drive is online I can view all the images.

OK, I suggest doing a Catalog Sync in "Full" sync mode.  Be sure to click the "Include Existing Paths from Catalog" button in the "Folders to Include in Sync" section first.

This should cause any missing proxies to be generated.

Unfortunately it's still not working. Some are viewable and some aren't. Log is attached in case it matters.

Are there any tasks that are running that indicate that they're working on building the proxies?

It will take time, it's not instantaneous.  The sync will finish quickly and proxy generation can take hours or even days.

Where would I find if a task is running and/or proxy generation is happening? Do I need to resync the offline HD now that I've unplugged it to test it?

Where would I find if a task is running and/or proxy generation is happening?

It is in the Tasks pane at the bottom left area of your Contact Sheet window (you currently have it hidden).  You can make it visible by clicking on the horizontal splitter and dragging it upwards.

Do I need to resync the offline HD now that I've unplugged it to test it?

An offline drive cannot be synced.  It must be online during the sync and the proxy generation phase.  If you've been unmounting it before these tasks complete, that would explain why some of your proxies are missing.

Make the Tasks pane visible and see what's going on.

Yup, that was the issue. Because I'm curious: under Catalog Image Preview Generation what is a batches? Is that the number of images left?

There are 100 images in each batch.  Take that figure and multiply by 100 and you'll have a good estimate of how many proxies (previews) remain to be processed.
