Unwanted quit PM 4.5.2
« on: August 19, 2007, 03:07:22 AM »
When trying to paste text into IPTC Caption field with right click mouse context menu, PM 4.5.2 quits every time without any question or action. Under Win XP SP2.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

Szurkebarat, I can confirm this problem as well.  Just tested it and bang, PM quits.  It actually quits on pasting info this way on other fields as well.  So does trying to copy etc.  Seems to me there is a bug in the way the menu actions are handled...

Until this is fixed you can still use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-V or Shift-Insert to paste information.

Cheers,

Do either of you have the spell checker enabled or disabled?

Hi Kirk

Ok, I just tried this, I can confirm the bug. It crashes with Spell checking turned on. I do use custom dictionary as per your instructions in the forum. With Spell checking turned off, no crashes. At first it crashed when alt-tabbing away, the second instance it crashed instantly when pasting the text. Third try, it works correctly! Fourth try, it crashes again. So it seems a bit intermittent.

Error box (translated):

Instruction at 0x00e396eb couldn't read memory address 0x01551afc. Read
opration couldn't be done.

Photo Mechanic Version 4.5.2, Windows XP SP2 Czech

Crash reporter made a report which I sent to Camerabits.

Hope this helps, Frantisek

I cannot reproduce the problem. It works well with this configuration:

Photo Mechanic 4.5.2
Windows XP 64bits.
Spell checker enabled in Spanish.
(tried en several NEF, pasted with the Wacom Intuos tablet)

saludos, jose.

My spell checker is active US and keeps quitting this way.
I tried to turn it off, it worked. At the moment no spelling checker but Copy & Paste works.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.

I tried to reproduce it and couldn't do so on my system.  For those of you who are experiencing crashes, do you have a custom dictionary like Frantisek does?

Kirk,
I can reproduce the problem on a Win XP MCE SP2 system running PM ver 4.5.2.

In preferences, if "Spell check text fields using US dictionary" is checked, then when I highlight text in the caption field, for example, right-click for the context menu and select "copy" or "paste", PM abruptly exits. I don't get any error messages, etc.

If the spell check option in preferences is not checked, then PM behaves normally, and I can use the context menu to copy and paste text without problem.

I have also noticed a couple of things...
- The problem isn't 100% consistent. Sometimes copy causes the problem; sometimes copy works ok and paste causes the crash. It seems that repeated testing causes more inconsistency. The problem seems more consistent when PM is first started.
- The shortcut keys don't seem to have an issue, only the context menu.

For what it's worth: I'm using the UK dictionary.  And it too crashes (consistently as far as I can tell).

OK, well then this pretty much implicates the spell checker module that we use.  It adds menu items to my context menu and I'd guess that it is causing the crash since not having the spell checker active or using the keyboard equivalents does not cause the problem to happen.

I'll look into the spell checker module and see if I can find out where it would have an issue.

When this crash occurs, do you get to see the contextual menu at all?

Yes, you get the context menu and the crash occurs at the exact moment you select and click the paste option in the context menu.

Hope this helps in finding the problem.
