No.  I don't think you've given me nearly enough information to diagnose the problem.

What version of Photo Mechanic are you running?
What OS are you running?
How slow is slow versus a non-slow Ingest?
Are you changing any settings between Ingests?
Are there more JPEGs in the slower case versus the faster case?

Please give as many details as you can.

PM 4.4.3.3
Windows XP Home(?)
I haven't measured the difference, but it's significant.  I ingested the same card twice yesterday, with different names, of course, and the difference was huge.

Which of the two Ingests was faster, the first or the second?
Did you remove the card and put different pictures on it between the first Ingest and the second Ingest?

the second ingest was faster; no changes to the card

That explains a lot.  Windows XP caches filesystem data in RAM.  So when a file is read a second time the read speed is significantly improved.  The first time you read a file it will be read at the transfer rate of the card, reading a second time comes from the OS disk cache which as I said is far faster...

maybe I didn't make myself clear; the ingest rate isn't consistent - sometimes quite fast, other times fairly slow; I ingested the card with the same images twice simply as a test

sometimes it seems to practically pause or hang

Are you switching in and out of PM during the Ingest?

If you want to do a speed test, you're going to have to compare apples to apples.  Unmount the card and remount it between Ingests (this may not completely flush the OS disk cache but I don't have any more specific instructions to give you to definitively flush the OS disk cache.)  Then run your second speed test.

I haven't been switching out of PM; I'll run another test.

Are you using the "exact" same cards when you notice a sped difference?  I have a few different cards and they all process differently.
