Spitting camera original file types into seperate folders
« on: August 29, 2007, 06:06:51 AM »
Hello,

I have folders in which the camera original jpegs are mixed in with the RAW files.

Is there anyway with Photo Mechanic to automate the process of splitting them up into two seperate folders?

Specifically, into sub-folders based on the name the of the original containing folder?

Thanks,

Anthony

There is no fully automated way to do that.  You can do one of the following:

You can use the Copy Photos command on the File menu.  It has a Move photos option checkbox that you can set.

This would be a two step process.  First select your photos, then open up the Copy Photos... dialog.  Set the Move option.  On the RAW+JPEG handling popup menu choose "Copy RAW files only" and then click the Copy button.  A folder picker dialog will appear.  Navigate to the destination, use the New Folder button and create your "RAW" directory and choose it.

Once the copy has finished you should be left in your Contact Sheet with just the JPEGs.  Use the Copy Photos... dialog to now move them to their own folder by clicking on the Copy button, creating the New Folder and choosing it.

That's one way.

The other way would be to un-join the RAW+JPEG from the View menu.  Then change the Sort popup menu in the toolbar to "Sort by {type}" which should put your RAW files together at one end and your JPEGs at the other end.  Then in the Navigator, use the contextual menu to create your RAW and JPEG folders and then use drag and drop to move the two sets of files into their respective folders.

In the Move Photos checkbox it says "(delete originals)". Would the files be copied and then deleted or would they be actually moved in this situation within the file system? i.e.- would it be like a Finder drag & drop move or would it be a copy & delete?

It does a fast move if possible, a copy followed by a delete if not.

In other words, move only, if the destination resides on the same volume, otherwise a copy followed by a delete, if not?

That's correct.
