Problems with IPTC captions not staying
« on: October 01, 2007, 03:36:56 PM »
 :-\
Hi there after strugling with this for some time, I thought Ild ask the source.

My work flow is like this
Mac PB G4 OSX 10.4.9
PM ver 4.3.7
Iview 3.1.1
Photoshop CS2

My normal work flow is to ingest my cards via PM, and apply basic info at that time. Photographer/location/basic caption info...etc.

I shoot in using Canon 5D raw. then do a quick edit/selection in PM, any post processing needing in Photoshop (unsharp mask etc.), then save jpegs back out for transmitting. It is at that time that I update any caption info.in PM.

Then I open them in Iview to generate quick web pages w/captions

This is where I am running into troubles. The info I'm adding isn't sticking.
when I open the image in PM using the info button the info is there.
When I open the same image in Iview or PS the old info is there.

Also is there a limit on caption length in characters?

Thanks for any help.
Very frustrated, after hours of captioning. I have to start over.

Daren

PS I just tried pasting the correct IPTC info in Iview updating the file
the info sticks, but now shows as blank in PM.....arghhhh :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Are the images at this point JPEGs or are they CR2 files?

There are limits in the specification but they are quite generous and I would not expect you to be exceeding the limits (Caption field:2000 characters)

The main thing is likely that your version of Photo Mechanic is really old and predates the addition of RAW captioning and XMP.  I'd suggest downloading and trying PM 4.5.2 as it has both RAW embedded captions and XMP sidecar support, and is highly customizable in its handling of IPTC/XMP data.

Version 4.3.x is missing all of that.

The problems are all with JPEGS

After I do the ingest/quick selection.
I then open those RAW files in PS that is where I convert the files to JPEG

Then I reopen the (jpeg files) in PM to add additonal caption info.
This is when I run into problems.

In PM at this point the new caption info shows up if I use the info button, but when I open the same jpeg in another program...ie PS, or iview. it still has only the orig (ingested) info.

I just downloaded the new verof PM under demo.
Again I can see the new data when I bring up the info button, then again I open it under Iview, and the data is different.

So I tried a test. I used the update IPTC data under tools, and told PM to use jpeg.
I then opened the file under Iview and it stuck!

Yea so why is this happening?

Also what happened to the option to view/sort by color class?
am I missing it?
Thanks

It sounds like you have more than one IPTC record in your JPEGs.  You can tell PM to read the first or the last one when there are multiple IPTC records.

There are more options now.  See the Color Class filter widget at the bottom right corner of the window.  It can view/filter by any combination of colors.  You can use the Sort popup menu to sort by Color Class and a number of other custom sort criteria.
