Card ID
« on: October 27, 2007, 07:53:56 AM »
Is it possible to see which CF card an image came from? I downloaded from a 3 CF cards and had a unreadable file (I shoot RAW+JPG) the Raw was no good but I had the JPG. I was wondering if there was a way to keep track of that card (I'm not sure which card it was) in the future to see if it's a card issue.

Why don't you have a look at the cards themselves?  All your images should still be there (unless you told the ingest to remove them, which is not recommended).  This also gives you the opportunity to try downloading the image again.

Hope this helps.

I reformated the 3 - 4gb cards before I realized a RAW file was 0 kb. Since I generally work from the JPG's I didn't notice the problem till a few days later.

Well, even if you have formatted it, you may still be able to recover the images from it.  Many cards actually come with some sort of image rescue utility.  You may try that on your cards.  (On the one occasion we accidentally formatted a card, we were able to recover all images!)

Hope this helps.

No, it is not possible if you've reformatted the card.  If you hadn't then there is a little bit of information that Ingest puts on the card so that the Incremental Ingest functions.  With that info, it is possible to see the list of files that came off of that card.

Would it be possible to store a unique string in a small text file on each card, which would then be read by PM on ingest and made available as a variable?

This could be used to keep track of which card an image was ingested from, and if specific cards were assigned to specific cameras, which camera an images came from. This could be useful for cameras that don't support a unique serial number and/or comment field.

This is main reason I do not use the ingest function of PM.

My way:
1. create a folder on my PC
2. copy the pictures from the card to this folder
3. compare the files on the card with the files in the folder with the Windows utility windiff.exe

What?  Why do you even need to do step three?

OK, so why is it that you're not using Ingest?
