You can search very efficiently using PM, just open your images in a contact sheet you want to search. You even can open complete hierarchies down from the top. Only for search (if your files are online) you don't need cataloging.
how does the search in recursive folders work?

He means that you need to open a multi-folder contact sheet and then use the Find panel.

Although opening a multi-folder hierarchy with thousands of images may take some time. A catalog (i.e. database) could do this faster. This is what Spotlight on the Mac is all about.

While not intergral with any other photo software - Picasa 2 by Google is an amazing tool for seaching on a Windows machine or network. if it's in the metadata Picasa will find the file in no time.

Collections in the upcoming cataloging program?
« Reply #35 on: January 09, 2009, 10:08:03 AM »
I expect that "Collections" is already on the list of things to include in the coming Cataloging program, but if not I would like to make a strong plea for something like this.

I've reached the stage where I would like to begin to collect my very best images into Portfolios, each with a coherent theme and uniform quality. I would like to be able to look at and manage each of the portfolios as a unit.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks
