New User big issue
« on: February 04, 2008, 03:02:16 PM »
Goodday.

I work for a photography agency in LA.
We have just purchased 10 licenses for Photo Mechanic

We are running into a big problem with the © symbol

When we send images from photo mechanic to our host computer
our copyright line's come out with a bad caracter to the left of the ©

It looks like an A with a ^ over it

We are using IPTC only.
With our testing we believe it may be adding a hidden XMP character

This is a big issue for us
Please get back to me asap

What character encoding are you using on your two systems?  The copyright symbol is outside of the 7-bit ASCII range and is undefined by the IPTC standard.  You'll either need to use Unicode encoding or make sure that you use the same character encoding on both systems.

Thank you for your fast response.

This has worked in the past.
We are happy to try the unicode.
Can you tell us what the code is on a mac for the copyright symbol.

The copy right symbol works fine in photoshop, Fotoware, framview.
Just seems to have issues with your software.

Our work flow work as followed

Photographers take pictures FTP them to our office our editors on macs (currnetly use Fotoware) catption and edit photos and push them to our Photo managment software (fotostation server) which then indexs photos for website digital sale and prints.

any how we love all the options in your software and have bought 10 of them for our editors to replace the client side fotostation software we are using.

This is becoming a big issue for us and would like to resolve this as fast as we can.

Please feel free to contact me in anyway
I have also emailed a copy of the thread to your support email
that has all my contact info also in it.

thank you

What difference does it make whether we use Unicode or ASCII (to us and to the client)???

From what Kirk is telling me is that the copyright symbol is out side the 7bit ASCII table
which in turn will not produce the © as wanted

If you want to send me a photo that shows the copyright symbol correctly in your Fotoware software and does not show up correctly in Photo Mechanic, I can try and figure out what encoding you're using.  Then you'll set Photo Mechanic to use the same encoding.

Contact me directly by clicking on my name to the left of this message and then click on the "personal message" link.  I will give you an email address to where you can send a single example photo.

OK, so what "Default IPTC Encoding:" is working for you?  "Mac Roman" is the default.

Image included i don't believe it was the encoding it self because we have tryed that in the past
it had to be that and something else

I emailed my settings to the photogrrapher and he inputed them and worked fine
but the other day we spent 3hrs working on this in the office
