Extracting jpg's from NEF files
« on: April 02, 2008, 01:04:44 PM »
Hi Kirk,

For extracting jpg's from NEF files I currently use 'Export' because I can set the image quality _and_ I can define the max picture size in pixels. But, I don't like the overhead of the generated HTML files and the export dialog itself which is too complex for this task. The tool 'Extract JPGS...' cannot be used because there there are no options to define the quality and the picture size.
Would it be possible to implement quality and picture size in the 'Extract' tool, or support this under the 'Save as' command ?
Any chance to a max file size setting can be implemented too when exporting to JPG ?

Thanks again,

Serge

In the upcoming 4.6 version, Save As can do the extraction along with all of its other features.

Kirk,

Any chance that the jpg quality slider will be enhanced to provide more sensitivity at the low end?

Right now there are 11 quality settings, 0 - 10.  At the high end, there is not too much visible difference between settings 8 and 9, for instance.  However, at the low end, there is a great deal of difference between setting 1 and 2 (and the file size is often 100% different).  I'd like to be able to select a compression size between 1 and 2.

I agree with Deven. I think the slider should control a non lineair scale.

Hi Kirk,

Will we be able to saveload different sets of settings of jpg quality, picture size, etc...? Something like:
- High Quality (5000*5000, 100% quality, no subsample chroma)
- Web (800*800, 60% quality, subsample)
- Slide show (1920*1920, 80% quality, subsample)
- Thumbs (160*160, ...)
etc...

Thanks,

Serge

Yes, but not with those names like "High", "Web", etc.  It will work just the same way as the Save As dialog has always worked with non-RAW files, but will now work with RAW files.
