* Code Replacement - Two Suggestions

This one has not been implemented but they are fairly easy to implement so I'll see what I can do to get them into 4.6.

OK these are partly good news.

Does 4.6. bring other big, new features? because this looks only like small enhancements, features, that are already in other party in PM (sharpening, variables...)

I ask, because there`s antother great software coming in the marked: PhotoGears,  http://photogears.de/

It has some great workflow features like distributing images AT ONCE to A LOT OF different email- and FTP-Sites, and so on... but due to the lack of an image browser (PM has a great) it is not yet an alternative, but the developer of course is planning to release an image browser as well.

If PM will go these small steps it should be easy to catch up with photogears. ;-)

I have a list of 60 new features in PM 4.6 and the list is growing.  Some features are fairly major (in my opinion) and most are refinements and improvements requested by our users.

If PhotoGears helps you out better than PM does, then purchase PhotoGears.  By the way, the link you gave does not work.  I find it really hard to believe that software that is primarily written to upload files will ever produce an image browser that can compare with Photo Mechanic.

Your request for multiple upload destinations never really included UI information that we could use.  If you really want this feature implemented, then tell us how we could make it work.   Mock up a UI in Photoshop and send it to us.  If it seems implementable then we'll look into developing it.

I'm looking for two features that will help us automate our breaking news workflow.
1) the ability for photo mechanic to watch a folder and FTP any files that drop into that folder automatically
2) the ability to set the ingest dialog to start ingesting when a card is inserted (I know the dialog comes up automatically, but I want it to start ingesting without having to click the "ingest" button on the bottom of the screen)

thanks,

The functions requested by Ben make a lot of sense to me.

Rather than adding the first (automatically sending when saved to a folder) as a function though may I suggest this could be more easily provided by Camerabits producing Mac and Windows compatible scripts that can be attached to a folder, with brief instructions on how to customise the script for each user (eg "Change this to your settings" marked in a different colour) The script would then be activated to use PhotoMechanics ftp function when a file is dropped into this. Up until Apple stuffed up Mail I had on here a set of scripts that carried out this function for emails. Folders for each client had a personalised script attached. Although I cobbled them together myself lack of scripting knowledge made it difficult to replicate the action for ftp due to writing the correct paths. I am guessing this would be even more difficult with Photo Mechanic as the software has so many functions. I believe that one of the ftp software producers do already offer a similar script for their own product so hopefully this is something you will be able to add.

Brendan, may I suggest that rather than using Photo Mechanic to send to multiple clients you look into having a program written which allows you to upload once to a server and then it automatically sends to all your selected clients. I admit I am lucky in having a friend who is an IT whiz and who recently wrote a programme (initially in his lunchbreak !!) which allows me to do precisely this. (Previously the script I mention above was used for creating and sending multiple emails. The system though was time consuming, expensive and impractical when competing against the big agencies.) Yes, with my program I have to action the final transmission but as the operating pages are very small file wise I can operate this quickly via a mobile phone and it removes the problem of slowed or dropped transmission, any time lost is more than saved with the cutting of the inital transmission times (transmission time from the host server is a fraction of that when sending individually) and all publications are getting the pictures at pretty much the same time. The script even allows for sending via email or ftp, resending images and, presetting destinations (eg daily newspapers, sunday newspapers, all etc). I am sure you could have such a program customised even more to your specific needs. Unfortunately I can't let you have the script or the developers name because of his own work obligations but hopefully this may be an alternative that you feel is worth investigating.

nmf: good idea, we`ll see what we do in this case,

but it would be nice if PM would have just ONE MAIN UPLOAD window, in that we can pre-configure all kind of upload-typs (ftp,sftp,gallery2,flickr,..,E-Mail - and not any longer with the seperate email window.

thanks!

... at least it would be helpful to configure several <Upload buttons>. So we can choose different destinations faster. Upload via <email> should be included.

or szurkebarat's suggestion:

Maybe the button could allow for setting up a default upload and right clicking on it could pop up a context menu for the possible alternatives.

I think Ben's suggestion of being able to prepare the Ingest options beforehand (like when setting up your laptop before the game) and then having it automatically ingest upon disk detection is a good one. Perhaps an option under the General Preferences: On mount of Camera Disk: "Automatically Ingest" or something like that. Combined with the pre-set Ingest dialog options of "Erase Source Disks.." and "Unmount Source Disks" this could really make for a fast workflow when downloading cards at halftime, etc.

On the FTP hot folder issue I'd also suggest Transmit might be a better option for this than Photo Mechanic.

Vincent Laforet wrote about how he has this exact thing setup with Transmit and Automater and even provides the script to get started.
