Spotlight search over networked drive
« on: October 21, 2008, 07:59:57 AM »
hi Kirk,

with Spotlight indexing now available on an Xserve running 10.5 can you add that functionality into PM's search feature?

Thanks

Are you saying that you've tried it and found that it doesn't work?

yes I have tried, but PM searches only the local drive.

And if you search with Spotlight itself, does it search the server volume as well?

Kirk,

given that fact do you think you could add a feature for PM to search the server in 4.6?

Possibly.  Are you willing to test it for me?  I don't have an XServe running 10.5 server at my location to test with.

I would be happy to. Please let me know what you need me to do.

By the way, I have been testing it with the finder and it is remarkable how well it works with finding files.

hello photo mechanic team,

during this year i have tested some solutions for archiving my pictures. i'm working with apple and mac os x leopard.

in the moment i'm working for only one reason  with m$ expression media pro (i have started with i view media pro some years ago): indexing/archiving over the network.

this is the only one "go" for expression media and a absolutely "no go" for photo mechanic! - sorry for that.

photo mechanic is one of the best: a flat design, easy to use an very fast.

i know many photographers they archiving their pictures.  all of them are using local drives for their pictures ... on the set, but not in the office! inside the office they have network-drives.

PLEASE:

set a higher price, but with a catalog / network indexing!!!!

if it's working over the LAN, i will buy photo mechanic.

regards hans

Hi Kirk.

While not really a network drive, Photo Mechanic searches my Drobo (indexed by Spotlight) very nicely on my mac pro. My question is: Can you limit PM to NOT search a particular Volume? For example, I have current 2008 images on an eSATA internal drive, as well as backed up on my Drobo (or could be any other Drive or Volume). Can I tell PM or Spotlight to NOT search the Drobo Volume in a particular saved Search, even though I would like the indexing to remain in place? Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Not currently.  In version 4.6 you'll be able to limit your search to particular volumes.
