White line on bottom of some photos created by PM!
« on: November 24, 2008, 07:10:08 AM »
Hi Kirk,

Running PM 4.5.3.2 with 10.4.11, creating exports with PM Classic, not modified version, from psd files, which have no lines on. About 10% of photos now have very thin, 1 or 2 pixel white line... Enclosed screen grab. Funny sometimes on thumbs, sometimes on large size but does not seem to be on both of the same image.

OK seems to be visible in the PM browser window but it is not there on the photoshop file... Would look like PM is using some of the cached files for thumbnails and larger size photos? I have Thumbnails default size set quite large, 2 lines from right.

Hope this all helps.

Upgraded to 4.5.4, trashed cache before starting and got PM to rebuild thumbs and new website, still the same problem... Any ideas Kirk...

OK, trashed cache, lowered thumbs size so smaller than PM Classic export size and reran PM. Same thing... At a loss... Actually checked previous PM Classic exports and they are there too.. Not so noticeable because lighter images.

I don't know what would be the cause.  If you can help me reproduce the problem, I'd be happy to look into it.

Kirk, I've checked the photos made by my modified PM Classic Export and the line is still there on a few. Regards, Charles

Charles,

Sure, let me know what I can do.

What I would like for you to do is the following:

1) Set PM to empty its cache on exit.
2) Quit PM.
3) Launch PM, and turn off the empty cache on exit.
4) Browse those photos until you start seeing the artifact appear.
5) Quit PM.
6) Find PM's cache folder and view the cached images with something besides PM.  PM's cache folder is usually in the following location:
         /Users/<your user name>/Library/Caches/Photo Mechanic/cache/

When viewing the cached images with a different application, do you ever see the artifact?  If so, then the problem lies in PM's caching system.  If you never find an image in the cache with the artifact then the problem lies in the on-screen rendering of the images in PM.

Let me know what you find out.

Hi Kirk,

I'm seeing quite a lot of these artifact in both the cache preview and thumb folders. Do you want me to email/private message a few of them to you?

Regards, Charles

Sounds like an issue with the caching system then.  Could you send me some example images (the originals, not the ones from the cache) and tell me what thumbnail size causes the most artifacts?

Thanks,

-Kirk

How do you want me to send it? The FTP Server: fape.net does not seem to be working for me and I can't see a way to attach files to a private message. Regards, Charles

Hi Kirk,

Sent email with link to download 7 psd files, 175MB. Funny enough the cache example posted above, does not seem to have the line this time... i.e. after deleting the cache.

Thanks for the sample files.  I am able to reproduce the problem.  Unfortunately it lies in the QuickTime library that we use to load and scale PSD images.  Once we have our own PSD loader in place then this problem should be solved.
