I didn't know Thunderbird supported MAPI at all.  Does it?

So you're saying that sometimes it works?

yes ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/MAPI_Support ....)

yes, this is the really strange things. mostof the time it works, but then are some periods when I have big problems, then I have to be very quick with hit the SEND button.

thunderbird is widely used, it would be good to solve this (of course this can also be result from a issue in thunderbirds mapi) but we have to find out

Hmm.  Well Photo Mechanic certainly isn't deleting the attachment files until you quit and re-launch Photo Mechanic.  I would guess that if there are problems, they're probably on Thunderbird's end since on the page you referenced above, they admit to their implementation being buggy.

This not deleting part really should have a button or setting maybe hidden in preferences or I don't know where to be resolved without restarting PM.

I often find myslef in situations where hard drive gets full after large amounts of FTP uploads and I only have to quit PM and restart it just to deal with the tens of gigabytes taken by temporary files of PM.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.
