Write GPS Information in EXIF
« on: March 21, 2009, 02:08:12 PM »
It would be great if a future version of PM would write the GPS information in the EXIF so that programs like CaptureNX2 could "see" the GPS information. Right now I use Robogeo to geotag my photos with GPS info since it writes the info in EXIF, so it would save me time if I could do it in PM.

If I recall correctly, Kirk et al. have looked into this and adding fields to the EXIF info was quite complex and error prone.

But yes, if this could be done without any possibility of corruption, I would certainly like to see this implemented as well  :)

I've been using Robogeo which writes to EXIF and haven't had any problems, maybe they could make it an option in PM, they could add a check box in preferences where the user could decide if he wanted to write the GPS to the EXIF

Write GPS Information onto the EXIF header for the pictures fails from maintenance

Gallery version (not just "2"): 2.2.4
Module / Theme name & version: Google Map 0.5.6
PHP version (e.g. 5.1.6): 5.2.5
PHPInfo Link (see FAQ):
Webserver (e.g. Apache 1.3.33): 2.2.8
Database (e.g. MySql 5.0.32): 4.0.24
Activated toolkits (e.g. NetPbm, GD): NetPbm, GD, Imagemagic, jpegtran
Operating system (e.g. Linux): Solaris 10
Browser (e.g. Firefox 2.0): Firefox 2.0.0.11 + Safaris 3.0.4

Maintenance task "Write GPS Information onto the EXIF header for the pictures" is not working. It will always write zeroes to photo exif.

Here is an example when I manually enter data for a picture

Islamora Florida gives location 24.975337,-80.553644
Then I press "Write GPS to EXIF header"

If I look photo by jhead it shows correct data

GPS Latitude : N 24d 58m 31.2132s
GPS Longitude: W 80d 33m 13.12s

If I do the same for all pictures from maintenance it will write only zeros to exif.

Thanks Kirk, for adding the GPS information to the EXIF in 4.6.1 beta 7.  It works great and CaptureNX2 can now read the information.  I also noticed that you now include the altitude information along with Latitude and Longitude.  Good Work!!!! ;D
