MPF information invalidated by PM
« on: September 04, 2009, 05:25:15 AM »
When editing metadata, PhotoMechanic inserts information after the MPF APP2 segment in JPEG images.  This invalidates the MPF image pointers contained in this segment.  A number of current camera models by Panasonic, FujiFilm, Ricoh, Samsung and Sony contain this MPF information.  For the MPF spec, see:

http://www.cipa.jp/english/hyoujunka/kikaku/pdf/DC-007_E.pdf

Also see the note dated 2009-06-12 here:

I would be happy if you would fix PM to only add JPEG segments before the MPF APP2 segment.

Thanks.

- Phil

Phil,

This should be an easy fix, although files already "invalidated" won't be fixed by PM - they would have to use ExifTool for example  ;)

Thanks for the heads-up.

I wish these camera manufacturers would think twice about some of their decisions for writing metadata.  It really is a mess as your note points out (and I can think of plenty of other absurdities).

I hope JPEG-XR is rapidly put into use when it is finally ratified (it's taking forever).
