Fail to burn cd's and dvd's
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:01:34 AM »
Kirk,
I'm having some trouble with PM.
First, it's taking too long to open a relatively small contact sheet (say 400 photos).
Second, when I try to burn a cd or dvd, it crashes, and there comes an error message. The cd/dvd does not work anymore (can't be erased, etc).
I don'k know what is happening, the only different thing I've done recently was to create an Iphoto library to sync with an Iphone.
Do you think that could be the origin of the problem (perhaps a conflict)?
 I'm running PM 4.6.1 with a MacBook (10.5 Leopard)
Thanks in advance,
Rds,
Luiz Muzzi

I'd like to see the crash report.  Did you file it with the PM Crash Reporter?

Otherwise if you want troubleshooting help, please call our technical support folks at (503) 547-2888

They'll be able to help you much faster than I can via the forums.

Sorry, Kirk.
I think I didn't make myself clear.
The system didn't crash, the burning operation failed repeatedly (with an error message). And PM is also taking a long time to open contact sheets.
The driver is working properly (with Finder/Disk Utility).
As to calling your support personnel by phone, it's kind of difficult because I'm in Brazil (imagine the cost and the trouble).
Thanks for your quick answer.

OK, I'll try to help you here then.

What kind of files are you browsing?
How much time is 'a long time'?
What kind of sorting are you using in the Contact Sheet?
Are there any messages in the console.log or system.log?  (You can view those logs with the Console application (Applications/Utilities/Console))

What is the error message that you're getting?

Luiz,

The files are CR2+JPG.
400 photos is taking about 12,8 secs.
I`m using capture time sorting in the contact sheet.

Capture Time sorting is the slowest sort type (besides some of the custom sorts) since it has to parse each file for its EXIF data before the sort can occur.  12.8 seconds (I'll assume that 12,8 means just slightly less than 13 seconds) is perfectly reasonable.  Sort by Filename if you want the fastest response time.

Photo Mechanic uses the OS to burn discs (the DiscRecording.framework to be exact) and those messages are coming from the DiscRecording framework.  It sounds to me like there is something wrong with the OS or your system.  Have you tried restarting the computer?

Kirk,
I'll set filename sorting as default (unless necessary for renaming, etc).
Yesterday I wiped out Iphoto library, restarted the computer, and PM burned a CD just fine. It could be just a coincidence, but...
Anyway, Thanks a lot for your support.
It is really a great thing to know one can rely on immediate assistance from PM.
I am very satisfied with the system and although I am an amateur photographer I intend to renew my license when the time comes.
Rds,
Muzzi
