What is the point of XMP data in the stationary pad?

All my contact  data in xmp does not show up anywhere.  I would like include this data with my images.
How do I do this and have it show up in all the standard software like Photoshop?

What file format(s) are you working with?
What OS are you running?
What version of Photo Mechanic are you using?
