Painfully slow ingest occasionally
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:37:59 PM »
I'm having an intermittent problem with PM 4.5.4 on my Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.2

About 1 in 10 times that I ingest a card, it is painfully slow, as in 15min to dump 1.8GB. The problem has occurred with different card readers and different cards.

It happens both when ingesting to an empty folder or to a folder already containing files. File sorting is set to "filename."

Any ideas?

You might want to look here:

That version may help. Here is one item from the release notes:

* (Mac) Ingest now uses OS-supplied copy facility to copy images from the card.  This and other changes to file data transfer were done to speed up Ingests on Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) when certain flash cards or readers were involved (due to a bug in Snow Leopard causing 2 second delays for each file).

Photo Mechanic 4.6.3 addresses the issue you're experiencing.  Photo Mechanic 4.5.x is no longer being maintained.  Please try the 4.6.3 beta from the Announcements section of the forums:

I've upgraded to 4.6.3, and the problem continues. The ingest is speedy if I just drag the files in finder, but in PM it sometimes takes about 6 seconds per file. The issue is occurring about 33% of the time now.

Cards tried
2x 2GB Extreme IV
2x 4GB Extreme III

Card readers tried
Lexar UDMA dual-slot USB
Sandisk ImageMate USB

Would you be willing to try a logging version of Photo Mechanic so we can find out where the time is being spent?

Thanks,

Having the same problem you are.  Were you able to find an answer?

I see you posted on another thread about this same issue.  Just for completeness, please download and use this version:

http://camerabits.fileburst.com/PM4.6.3x.zip

It should solve the slow Snow Leopard Ingest issue.

Update on my issue. It has been working fine mostly, I was unable to recreate the problem with the logging version by doing small ingests.

However, I pin pointed the cause of the problem. The ingest is quick unless I have photos that I tagged in camera (1D Mark III.) If I have tagged photos it seems to ingest the tagged images first, then slowly ingest the rest.

Is this just a setting issue I have missed?

The 4.6.3x version should not have a problem, even if you've tagged images and have them ingest first.  Have you tried the 4.6.3x version?

I had 4.6.3, not sure if it was 4.6.3x. I downloaded the above link and installed it, will give it a shot.
