Extracting jpeg previews from raw photos
« on: February 03, 2011, 04:02:51 PM »
What would be the difference between using the option "extracting jpeg previews from raw photos" in PM and "adding thumbnail to image and save" in Canon's DPP?
TIA

I don't know what DPP's function does, but PM's Extract JPEG... command pulls out the JPEG data embedded in your RAW file and saves it to a new file without decoding and re-encoding the JPEG data.

Kirk,
An additional question on this subject.
If I use PM's option "Save as", it then decodes and re-encodes jpeg data, right?
Now, if I understand it right, when I edit the raw file with DPP, PM cannot do that anymore, that is reading the edited raw file and saving as a jpeg...Is that so?
TIA

Correct.

It can still load the embedded preview from the RAW file, it just won't reflect the changes you made in DPP.  It will look the same as the as preview embedded at the time the photo was taken.
