ingest from folder question
« on: August 22, 2010, 05:22:11 AM »
I have been ingesting images into a "Holding" folder before copying to various locations. The Holding folder has got rather large so I wanted to split the folder off into daily shoots.

There may be a more elegant way to do this in PM but I decided I would ingest the Holding folder and have Ingest "Copy photos into dated folder". I set the destination as a new folder to contain the dated folders and then up in Source paths I clicked Ingest folders and then clicked Add button. I navigated to the Holding folder and selected it but back in PM the folder was not added in the window and I could not set the source folder. I tried a few times and with different sources but this did not work.

Any thoughts?
John

I think the source folder and the destination folder for ingset cannot be the same nor on the same path.
As I understand you try to ingest from the Holding folder to create dated subfolders. But Holding folder cannot be source and destination as well because at one point it would cause the dated subfolders to be ingested again...

You should select an entirely different destination to ingest TO.

It is allways better to ingest at first into dated folders.
I also prefer adding the date to the filenames as well.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

Thanks very much! I did create an entirely separate folder outside of the ingested folder where the dated folders were to go. It was on the same volume though.

For your particular situation, you could also have used the "Move" instead of the "Ingest" command. When moving files, you can have it create a folder structure on the go as well. This structure can be complex and contain multiple levels.

One of my regular assignments is to shoot property and I like to group the images on month (I bill per month) and then on object for easier retrieval.  The variable part  of the folder name in the copy/move dialogue therefore has this form:
{datesort:0,6}00 {monthname} {year4}/{datesort} {location}, {city}

Giving me folder names like 20100800 August 2010/20100822 Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 147, Amsterdam

Very powerful indeed :)

Thank you Hayo. This is a very elegant way of doing it. I tried it and it works very well. I don't know of any DAM program out there that lets you do this.

Nonetheless I still have a problem that I don't seem to be able to ingest from a folder.

John,

Nonetheless I still have a problem that I don't seem to be able to ingest from a folder.

What is your source folder path?
What is your Primary destination path?
What is your Secondary destination path (if any)?

Here's the ingest window Kirk. I have tried to set as a source folder path various folders on another volume to no avail. After I hit the Add button and select a folder nothing comes up in the window.

OK, thanks for the screenshot.  What would be an example of a folder you're trying to add (full path please)?

Hello Kirk.
I have same problem here.
I can't add path ''Computer\Canon EOS 7D\CF\DCIM\100EOS7D''.
My operating system is Win 7 64 bit.
