PM takes long time to "come back"
« on: June 04, 2011, 10:59:11 AM »
Hi Team!

I recently have a strange behaviour with PM.
Currently I have a contact sheet open with about 900 images in. I unchecked the first 2 "colour indicators" and I scroll throug the images in full size. I tage some of them as !1! and some as "2". When closing the full screen view PM is going to update the filtered contact sheet to show only un"coloured" images.

This takes about 2 or 3 minutes. PM consumes in that time nearly ALL of the CPU.
PM is running from a SSD, the images are on my 2nd internal disk on the MacBook.

PM 4.6.7 on MacOS X 10.6.7
After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

So you're saying that you start out in the contact sheet, use the Color Class Filter widget in the bottom right corner of the screen to deselect the first two colors.  Does it take a long time at this point?
Then you open up the Preview window and mark some images with the first color class and some with the second color class.  Next you close the Preview window and return to the contact sheet.

It then takes a long time to rescan the contact sheet?  Can you use PM during this time, or do you have a spinning, colorful mouse cursor?

Kirk, you got it!

PM is not usable at this time and i get the "wheel of fortune" spinning at this time. Activitymonitor shows also PM not responding.
After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

Did it the other way now. Having no filters applied, a folder with 750 images. Tagged some in the first and second colour while being in Preview. Then closed the preview and all is fine.
After that I deselected the first colour to show only the red and untagged images. This takes ages now. PM gives the Wheel of fortune and in the lower right PM says: "sort in progress".

Nothing special in the logfile...

Sven,

Does this seem like new behavior since PM 4.6.6?

Filtering by stars or color class does take longer to sort than sorting by filename alone until all metadata is loaded for all images in the contact sheet.  Have all of the thumbnails loaded?

Krik,
all thumbs have been loaded before starting to select images. I cannot remember when it started to be slow as now. But as far as I can remember it was a lot faster with an older version. For sure it was fast as hell with 4.6.5.

Disk-Cache is set to 4 GB with deleting it when PM closes and RAM to 384 MB

Short Update: Even without having colour-classes hidden it takes a long time to get responsive at all...
Having a folder with 1035 images in there, went in preview through about 502 of them, tagged 2 images in red and 404 in yellow, captured the ones marked in yellow and then quit the preview mode it took 12 minutes to become responsive again. After that time it started "Sort in progress" even the sort is by filename and no files have been deleted or added in between.
This step took another 6 min.
After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

OK, well we'll see if we can reproduce the issue.  If not, then I'll have to send you a diagnostic version to get to the bottom of the issue.

One more thing to add:
The same issue as before but when I close the preview and switching to a different App in the time, PM "re-indexes" all files, and then (when PM is finished) get the focus back on PM it takes another few minutes with the spinning wheel in the lower left of PM.
After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.
