Country abbreviation code
« on: August 25, 2012, 03:52:21 AM »
I am consistently having difficulty with the country codes and I am not sure where the list used in Photo Mechanic derives from. For instance Germany appears in the list as DEU (short for Deutschland) and yet Germany's National Olympic Committee uses GER (Germany). In the case of the Netherlands the National Olympic Committee uses NED (Nederland). There are many different names used for countries with Holland an obvious example. In fact I cannot find the code for Holland or Netherlands. Is it possible to standardise the codes around those used by National Olympic Committees or ISO Codes which are now adopted worldwide?

Sorry, but that might have been better posted in Feature Requests.

Obviously Camerabits can provide a definitive answer.

But on a cursory examination (using PM4) the country codes already appear to be ISO-3166 codes. The Netherlands is there, it's "NLD", the ISO code. You can find info comparing ISO, IOC and FIFA country codes on wikipedia.

Personally I would have thought ISO codes are the way to go, they may not be as obvious as some IOC codes but they are the international standard. Whereas the Olympic codes are only relevant to one event every 2 years (summer and winter games).

Cheers,
Tony

Thanks for that insight. I would guess that most people using country codes would prefer them to be sports related. At the Olympics there were well over 100 countries involved in judo, which I specialise in, and I would have thought there would be at least a similar number of countries involved in most of the individual sports. I am sure adopting the IOC standard would be suitable for most photographers. Better still, would it be possible to build into PM the ability to use one of the three lists depending on needs?

Sorry again to be writing this in the wrong category.

Photo Mechanic uses ISO country codes.  In Photo Mechanic: Version 5 we even make the default label say "ISO Country Code:".

The list is customizable in PM 5.  Feel free to add any additional codes that suit your needs.

Thanks Kirk. I have been able to add an individual code such as NED or GER but they are not permanent to the drop down list and have to be added each time they are needed. I've have looked at the Accessibility page and the customisable sections before but I can't see how I can add IOC codes anywhere.

Also, I am limited to using classic IPTC due to the agency I contribute to. However, I would love to add Location to the Classic IPTC. Is that possible too?

The Classic dialogs are 'Classic', meaning that they are no longer being updated with new features.  In order to upload from the IPTC Info dialog you must use the non-Classic IPTC dialogs.  They're customizable now so if you don't want all of the many new fields you can turn them off.

At some point we will probably remove the Classic IPTC dialogs from Photo Mechanic.

You can customize the new IPTC dialogs to have only the fields that exist in the Classic IPTC dialogs.  Just un-check the visibility of the fields you don't want and they won't appear in the dialogs.

If you add country codes in the new IPTC dialogs they'll stick and you can use them later without having to enter them again and again.

There is really no reason to use the Classic IPTC dialogs unless you just really like the form factor of them.  No additional features will be added to the Classic IPTC dialogs.

Thanks Kirk.

I've tried it and will work on it more. I think it is definitely worth retaining the Classic IPTC so that you can go from personalised info to the bare minimum for agencies etc and then back to lots of info as needed.

I think it would be great to most of us to have an option with the country code list either to manually arrange the codes or just hava a snapshot like option to put some of them (more frequently used ones) to the front of the list like they would be added to a snapshot (just followed by the rest of them).
I guess most of us don't use all the country codes but mainly just a couple of them more frequently. It could make it easier to use the more frequented ones but still have the rest too.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

The new customizable dialogs support this capability as well.  Just make snapshots of your favorite layouts.  Give your snapshots descriptive names like "Agency Layout".  You can switch between them in a matter of seconds.  There really is no need for the Classic IPTC dialogs anymore.
