IPTC Stationary Pad

I am using v5 of Photo Mechanic but the program came with the User Manual from v4.6. It appears that some of the inputs to the IPTC pad have changed and I am puzzled by one. In the Keywords section there is a check boc before Keywords and to the right of that ther is another check box with a + sign. This is also in the Description Writers section. What is the second check box and + sign do?

The + checkbox appends the Keywords onto the photo's current keywords list.  If unchecked, then any current keywords will be deleted and replaced with the keywords in the Keywords field.
