problem with the latest Raw update from Apple
« on: October 26, 2012, 09:50:40 AM »
Last night i was running through a catalog and it was taking FOREVER to render the previews and move after tagging the images.

In the Raw setting panel, there is an option to Enable Raw Rendering (using Apple's ImageIO)
When I turned this off (unchecked the box) things sped right back up.

Any idea why this would happen

Well, it sounds like your updated ImageIO RAW rendering library from Apple now renders RAW files from your camera whereas previously it didn't.  When it was unable to render the RAW file, PM showed you the embedded JPEG preview which it could do very quickly.  Now that it renders, PM let Apple's library do the job.  As you can see, it is much slower to render RAW files.

For consistent speed, always choose to use embedded JPEG previews for thumbnails and preview images in Photo Mechanic.

Hi Kirk
I have always had the Apple Renders Raw box checked in the past, and the program ran fine until this last update.
I don't have any of the cameras affected in the this last update yet PM ran dog slow until I unchecked the box
really curious if anyone else is seeing this issue

for the record, It is Photo Mechanic Version 5.0, build 13444 (c5a5ad3)
and OSX 10.8.2

Yes, I've had the same issue.  I'm pretty certain I always had the "render raw" box checked, but since 5.0 it's restrictively slow.

However, Kurt replied on Oct 8 that the next release of PM5 would have performance improvements for the MacBook Pro and OSX 10.8.x.

BTW, that version has been released.  Please update.

Alan,

It shows that I am running the most current version...

You did list the most recent version (13444) as your current version.  I was responding to Boatguy's mention of an upcoming version on Oct. 8th.  It is out now and I wanted to make sure that he gets it.
