Fail to launch every other time I start PM5
« on: November 02, 2012, 02:58:00 PM »
Just about every other time I launch PM5 (build 13444) on my Win7 64bit box, I get a splash screen that says PM has stopped working.  If I close the error box and try to launch PM5 again it loads normal.  This problem started with the original Beta5 version, but went away (for the most part) when I upgraded to the paid version (although it would happen from time to time). Now that I have updated to build 13444, it seems to happen almost every time I launch... yet launches correctly on the 2nd try.

I have attached a JPEG of the error screen.

Thanks

Does anything from Photo Mechanic appear before that error dialog comes up?  Splash screen?  Main window?

No.. when I launch PM5, I immediately get the above error screen.. if I exit the error screen and re-launch PM5, I get the normal PM splash screen and program opens normal.

Thanks

OK, well then the next place we can look for info is in your PM.log file.  To find it, open up PM5, open the Preferences dialog, click on the Caching tab.  Look at the path in the Disk Cache.  Find that same path with Windows Explorer.  In that folder will be a file named PM.log which I want you to compress as a zip file and then attach it here.  There may be something useful in it (hopefully) that will let me know how far in the startup process PM 5 is getting.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Okay, here you go...  Also I might have an idea as well.  I have my Disk Cache set to a 120Gig SSD drive. The drive is a dedicated Cache drive for PM, PS, and CNX.  It is 80% free, so I know it is not disk space... but being on a SSD may have something to do with the first launch failure??    I will try and move the cache to a regular hard drive... while you peruse my PM Log.

Update.. moving the PM5 cache to a regular Hard drive did not help..  still getting the "Stopped Working" error box on first launch.

No messages in your log file look out of place.

When you say 'first launch' what exactly do you mean?  First since when?  I thought your launching issue happens every other time?

When I say first launch, I'm referring to the first time I launch PM5 from a closed state. (I get the error screen).   If I close the ""Stopped Working""error screen and launch PM5 again, it opens fine.   If I close PM5 and launch it again (third time) most of the time I get error screen again.  In other words. I get the error screen every other time I launch the program. In essence, this acts like the same problem many were getting (on every launch) when PM5 Beta1 was first released, except now it is basically happening every other launch/start of PM5

Not sure if this helps??  But this is what the log says on two launches just moments apart.  (Open- Error, then Open- No Error): I have highlighted the difference in red. Not saying this log entry identifies the issue, just what is different:

That error isn't preventing PM 5 from starting up, or there would be no further output.  It is also an expected error when the sort cache database file isn't present.  But it seems odd to me that your sort cache db keeps disappearing.

Are you running some sort of special environment on your Windows 7 PC that deletes files/settings between usages of applications?

No special environment that deletes any prefs. although the above was from the log just after I moved the Cache folder off the SSD to a HD, so it must not be the issue.  Subsequent starts are not showing "any" error in the log.   It seems when I get the "Stopped Working" error screen on program startup, nothing is being written to the log. program just stops at startup.

I have also found this ( http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=7237.msg33939#msg33939). It did not help (holding down the Shift key at launch) That did seem to reset some preferences, but I am still getting the "Stopped Working" error on just about every other launch/start of PM5  - Thanks

Hello,

Can you try reinstalling Quicktime on the machine and see if that fixes it for you: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

As suggested, I re-installed Quicktime from the supplied link, and I am still getting the "Stopped Working" error screen on every other PM5 startup.   This seems to have started when PM5 beta was first released and Camera Bits sent me a Beta Reg Number.  I have since purchased PM5 and received a full Reg Numbers , but ever since the Beta version was loaded and tested this problem has existed.

I suggest calling our support folks at 503-547-2888 and they'll help you uninstall all copies of Photo Mechanic, remove your current registrations, and install PM 5 again.

Kirk, I will call when I have the time to do a full uninstall and install of PM5.    Before I do, can you tell me how to backup all of my settings and preferences, so I do not need to do a complete setup or loose my Pref. Data.

Also, he is a thread that exactly address my situation.. but it has not proven fruitful. ( http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=7255.0 )
