Problem with preview mode on build 13645 (f749491)
« on: February 03, 2013, 12:35:37 PM »
Hi,

I just upgraded from the last upgrade to build 13645 (f749491) on OS X 10.8.2.

There is a new problem when scrolling through a folder full of NEF files.  The preview appears as a small 2 inch box
on the center of the screen before it expands to the full prview.  This never happened before.  Can you fix it, please?

Thanks.

Sure.  In the next build.

What PM used to do is show you that same image but scaled up to the full size image that is in the queue and isn't ready yet.  Now it shows you the best image it has available at the time but without scaling it up.  I'll change it to scale it up again.

Any way I can download the last build?  I'm having problem with this when scrolling through many pictures.

I don't understand how this can have any serious impact.  You either would get a small temporary image or a larger incredibly blurry temporary image.  Neither is particularly useful while you're waiting for the high-resolution version to appear.

I noticed the change as well. While it isn't a huge issue, I'd say the old way was "less jarring" than the new.

Maybe it is simply because we are all used to scaling that makes the new way more distracting?

The change is irritating because it goes from a black box with a small image in the center to the full preview.  The change in contrast from black to the image is much more noticeble than a preview image that snaps into focus.

I was wondering about that change as well, and thought it might be something to do with building or scaling the image. It's relatively minor, but I prefer the old method as well.

And I know it's been discussed in another thread, but I would also prefer the style of the icons in the previous build. I'm all for the 'new' look usually, but feel that going to the current icons and color scheme looks like a step backwards, instead of forward.

Otherwise, awesome job with the new build and features - Camera Bits is continually innovating and does an INCREDIBLE job with Photo Mechanic!

I received some sample NEF images from a friend but I cannot reproduce the issue.  When I browse on my system (MacPro tower) the images are full size but low resolution until the images snap into focus (the display time of the low resolution image is very brief).

Can someone make a movie using QuickTime that shows the problem (it would only need to be a few seconds long) and can you post screen shots of your Preview and RAW settings as well?
Also, can each of you detail what kind of system you're using and the OS version?

Thanks,

-Kirk

I agree the hesitation in the preview is distracting and dislike the new fonts but the main problem I have is when placing 5 stars on my photos i can only see them in the full preview mode. I work with 1000s of surf photos a day and this is one of the key features i use the most, thanks.

The 5-star gadget doesn't appear where?  It should be in the corner of the Preview and at the bottom of every thumbnail in the Contact Sheet.

What fonts are you referring to?

Sure thing, two movies linked showing 13507 and 13645. This is on a 2009 Mac Pro, 2.26 8 Core, 20 GB RAM pulling images off a Samsung 840 Pro SSD running OS 10.6.8. However I get the same behavior on a 2012 15" MacBook Pro Retina, 2.6 Quad, 16 GB RAM w/ SSD running OS 10.8.2.

These are JPEGS so I didn't include the RAW settings.

Hi, everybody
I will join this thread as I think it is much more a discussion than a support one.
I also prefer the old method of preview. The actual one is much more distracting.
It does not look "natural"...the natural thing would be rendering the preview in out-of-focus mode and then getting it sharp.
I hope this can be solved for the next build.
As another member mentioned in the icons thread, photographers are visual people... everything calls their attention (for the good and for the bad).
Regards,

-Luiz Muzzi

Everyone,

There is no need to discuss this issue further.  I consider it a bug that the rendering behavior has changed.  There is no debating it.  I am working on a fix.  If you have information that will help me reproduce the problem and fix it, please participate.

Thanks,

-Kirk
