Change image profile during 'save as'
« on: October 28, 2014, 04:32:32 AM »
Hi Kirk,

How do I output (save as) images with aRGB (Adobe RGB 1998) image profile rather than retaining the original (Profoto) icc.

Thanks

(PM v5)

You can't.  PM does not offer such a feature during Save As.

Thank you for your reply.

Am I correct in thinking the alternative would be to convert the JPG (with Profoto profile) into aRGB (Adobe RGB 1998) after output?

There is a tool in the Tools menu that can embed an ICC profile of your choice into JPEGs, but it does no color transformation, it merely embeds the profile.  So you could save to a JPEG and then embed the profile, but the results will likely differ from the results you would get if you were to convert to the Adobe RGB color space from within Photoshop.

Just for completeness, PM does offer a convert to sRGB upon save-as!

Thanks Haya,

Aware of that option (sRGB) but don't wish to throw away that much colour.

In case anyone is interested:

Just conducted a limited test

Prophoto TIF > Profoto JPG > change colour profile (only) of JPG into aRGB.

Not the same, but for this particular set, possibly a slight improvement, although there appears to be a loss of density where different shades of blacks meet (reduced colour spectrum would presumably create that effect).

Next question:

If the image is viewed via different platforms / computers / programs will viewing results differ? In other words, on my Mac images look consistent when viewed using PM, Lightroom and Preview. Would a person using Windows user see a similar result?

All things being equal: the Windows machine's display is calibrated (and is as good as your monitor), and the applications used to view the image support color management correctly, then yes they should see a similar result.
