read-only locations (re-visited)
« on: June 09, 2015, 02:17:03 PM »
There was a discussion a few years ago about PM and read-only locations. I wonder if anything has changed or been added in PM.

For safety reasons our whole NAS archive is read-only. However it seems this defies any of PM's rating/tagging capabilities. A typical application we'd use PM for is to go into a job on the NAS, tag some files and then copy them for further editing.

Alas, this doesn't seem to work, since PM obviously wants to write the tag or any ratings directly into the file. The only working approach seems to be to copy the whole job, tag and then delete all untagged files.

This is not the most economical approach and also potentially time consuming if a large folder of RAW files needs to be copied.

Is there any better workaround for this?

Thank you!

How are you doing the copy once you have tagged/rated the read-only files?  From within PM via the Copy dialog?  Some other way?

No, and what we'll likely be doing in PM6 is disabling edits on files that can't be written to.  You won't end up wasting your time on lost work, but then you won't be able to make changes and later realize them on some other writable media.
