Search function issue
« on: September 07, 2015, 11:47:38 PM »
Hello,
i recently found out that the search function based on "Captured Exactly" does not return any image when it's performed within a folder containing JPG photos only, while it works with RAW files.
All the photos have been converted by Lightroom as usual, and i can see that all the IPTC values are still there, including the Time and Date value.
I attach a screenshot of the IPTC Info panel of one of those files which cannot be found, taken both from the jpg and the RAW versions.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Carlo

Thanks for the screenshots.  What I'd like to see is the parameters in the dialog you're using to perform the search.  Take a screen shot of the dialog and post it here, please.

here's the screenshot.

Are the JPEGs and the RAWs in the same folder you limited your search?

Then you'll have to have your path limits include the folder that the JPEGs are stored within or the Search won't consider your JPEGs as matches for your query.

That's what i do actually, the path of the search always goes and ends into a folder where only JPEGs are stored

"Captured" searches for the EXIF capture time tag, and has nothing to do with the date show in the IPTC dialogs.  Are you sure the Capture Time of your JPEGs match your query date?  What does the {date} variable show for the images in question?  (You can put the {date} in your Info Text by going to Edit->Settings->Set Info Text... and entering it there.  Then when you show Image tooltips or go into the Preview window, you'll see the Capture Date.

Yes Kirk, the date is correct, see the attachments.
This is the info displayed for one of the photos that are stored inside a folder with jpgs only, and some hundreds of them have been taken on august 25th. If i perform the search in a folder with exactly the same images, but RAW, all is ok...

Hmm.  We use Apple's Spotlight for doing the searches.  What happens if you use the Spotlight widget from the Finder (upper right corner of your menubar, which looks like a magnifying glass)?  Does it find your images?

what should i type there? it's a blank field. i tried to use the search function in finder, but the "captured" option does not exist, only the "created", which is very much different

Let's try this:

Open a Terminal window.  Then type "mdls " (without the quotes, that is type mdls and a space character with the spacebar.)  Then find your JPEG image with the Finder and drag and drop it onto the Terminal window.  (The path to the file should be entered for you.)  Then press enter/return.

Copy the text that appears and paste it in a reply here.  The item in question we're looking for is "kMDItemContentCreationDate".  If it does not exist, then Spotlight won't be able to find this image by Capture time.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Hi Kirk, here's the text from the terminal window: unfortunately there's not the text you've mentioned, but only the creation date, that is the date when finder saw the file for the first time on this mac...

No, it's right there.  But look at the date.  It is the 24th and not the 25th.  I expect that if you change your search to be 8/24/2015, you'll see your JPEGs.  Now, as to why this is happening?  I have no idea.
