Can PM remove selected EXIF Data?
« on: September 01, 2006, 05:06:40 PM »
I'm a newbie, but can PM do a batch removal of data from selected EXIF fields?   I'd like to remove the data on the camera make, model, F-stop, shutter speed, ISO,  ???flash, etc. from image files I sell to newspaper editors. I'd like to do that to a whole folder full of images at one time.
Thanks
  Steve

You can use the Mask/Unmask tool to completely mask out the entire EXIF block of data.  It's an all or nothing thing, and you can Unmask it later if you want.  The tool will operate on as many photos as you want, all at once.

Save As... can also omit the EXIF data if you'd like.

There is no selective EXIF tag removal in Photo Mechanic.

kirk, unmask is not removing!

from the manual:
Quote
Data that is masked is not deleted, and can be unmasked
to retrieve the original info (except as noted
below). Masking simply hides the data from
most applications by changing the normal tags
or resource IDs to something different.

is there a exif removial planned? but the ICC profiles should be keept.

Mask is what you want, not unmask.

So what's the problem with that?  No other application is going to be able to identify the masked EXIF data since it is scrambled.

Please explain your needs.

whats the different to the "delete Metadata - EXIF" function in XnView
or in IrfanView: Save Without Exif data.

is this also "only" masking?

I don't know.  I don't have any experience with either of those apps.

So to answer your thread's original question:  "Can PM remove selected EXIF Data?"

The answer is: No.  Losing the original file's EXIF data is just something we're not going to do.  If you're willing to do a Save as... then you can save the file without the EXIF data which sounds similar to IrfanView's "Save Without Exif data" feature.

There are plenty of other programs like Jhead that can manipulate exif data.

that can be true, but when I want sent images without exif data to customers with PM, then it would be nice if PM can remove the exif data. why use for this simple task another software.

Via what method are you sending your images to your customers?

ingest and sorting with PhotoMechanic, some one I edit with photoshop, removing EXIF data with XnView, and then I send with PM via ftp or email.

Hi,

AFAIK Photo Mechanic is hiding the EXIF whereas Ifranview strips it out. With PM you always restore the EXIF (unmask).

kirk, can you confirm that?
if yes,why not offer in PM the    possibility to DELETE Exif data?

I can confirm that Photo Mechanic can mask (hide) EXIF data and that this process can be undone.

Why don't we have an option to delete EXIF data?  We don't like to delete data from images.

Why do you need to delete the EXIF data?

In PM all it takes is doing a Save as.../FTP As... and don't check the "Preserve EXIF information when possible" checkbox.
