Adobe Camera Raw
« on: October 22, 2006, 12:43:17 PM »
Hi,
I have a (new!) problem with my NEF Raw files: after I have edited my Raw-pictures i PS 8.0 (Camera Raw) and then saved them (I use alt-update in PS) the changes don´t show in PM (4.4.3.3). When I open them again in PS the changes are still there.
Also I can se all the changes in my files if I look in the browser in PS.
What do I do wrong?

ACR and Bridge store IPTC captions in XMP sidecar files, though they do read embedded IPTC/XMP out of RAW files.  So what is happening is that ACR/Bridge are putting your updated captions into XMP sidecar files.  You likely have your preferences in Photo Mechanic set to read embedded IPTC/XMP first.  If you change it to read from XMP Sidecar files first (since you're using Adobe products) then Photo Mechanic will see your changes.

You may want to switch to an entirely XMP Sidecar file workflow since you're using Adobe products.  Just change your IPTC/XMP write preferences by unchecking the two Embed checkboxes.  The popup menu will automatically change to a proper XMP Sidecar file setting.

And I will be forever thankfull.

OK. Now I am really confused. I have done as told in the screenshot but nothing happens. What I do is that I open the pics in ACR then save (alt-update). Nothing to see in PM. If I then open the pics again in ACR to see if the changes is still there, they are, but when I close it again a message pops up (see attach). That is also the case if I click OK in ACR and the pics open in Photoshop.
What is the problem??

If I uncheck "Add embedded IPTC" as you suggest, the captions also disappear. :P

Best Karsten

Find your file in the Finder.  Is there an XMP file with the same name already present?  Could you send me an example?  Contact me privately by clicking on my name to the left of this message.

I have looked in Finder and there is only one xmp present. If I upload an example to you, will the xmp follow? Best Karsten

I think you are not talking about the same issue.

I believe  Karsten is trying to say is that he cannot see any changes in the thumbnails and previews after he has edited the files in ACR. He does not save the changes in a new file, but only in the XMP sidecar.

Am i Right ?  ???

Karsten,

Yes Soren. You are right. Tak.

Just to add: Unless you render the RAW file and create a JPEG, TIFF, PSD or some other file type, then you won't see the changes in the RAW file because ACR does not update the JPEG previews inside the RAW files themselves.  You would however see the final rendering in the file you saved as JPEG, TIFF, etc.

OK, That´s it then. So I don´t have to make the changes in preferences?

Well since you're using an Adobe workflow, using XMP sidecar files is the best way to go.

So I recommend that you make the changes I outlined above.

OK. Thank you for your help.
Just to clear things up:  I check "Add embedded IPTC" or else my captions disappear?

Any suggestions as to the problem with the "Could not complete your request..." pop-up that I mentioned earlier?

Hmm... They shouldn't disappear, at least not in Photo Mechanic.  They should instead be present in XMP sidecar files.  What other software are you using to view caption data?

I have no suggestions because I have no idea why you are getting that message from Photoshop. It's a pretty vague error message.

Everything seems to be OK now with the captions. Don´t know what I did wrong.
Yes, the message from Photoshop is pretty vague, so I will just have to live with it.

Thank you again for your time and help. All the best Karsten
