Warning: Photo Mechanic crashes on OS X Yosemite 10.10
« on: July 26, 2014, 10:29:29 AM »
A warning to those adventurous souls that want to try the new beta of OS X 10.10.  Photo Mechanic crashes on startup.

Photo Mechanic 5.0 (build 15800)
OS X 10.10 (14A299l)

Attached is the crash log.  My ignorant assessment is it might be an issue with the addition of FeedbackMenu to the Help Menu.

Your assessment is not ignorant at all.  It is spot-on.

It's Apple's fault.  They will have to fix it.  The last Yosemite beta ran PM5 just fine.

Apparently their code that adds the Feedback options doesn't work well with a Help menu that has a sub-menu on it like PM5's Help menu does.

I doubt they will, but it should be removed by the final version of the OS.  You're not doing production work on a beta OS are you? ;)

As a temporary fix you can download the 4.6.9 version of Photo Mechanic.  It seems to work on OS X 10.10.

It's my understanding that if you delete the Feedback assistant application (so it doesn't try to modify PM'S Help menu) then PM works fine on Yosemite.

To remove the Feedback Assistant app, open the Applications folder and then the Utilities folder. Look for Feedback assistant icon. It could be an alias. If it is an alias then right click the icon and then select the Show Original option from the contextual menu. Now you should be able to delete the Feedback Assistant app.  Be sure to put the app and any aliases in the Trash and empty the Trash.

Downloaded OS X Yosemite 10.10 Beta 3 this afternoon and PM5 seems to be working well now. No more crashing on startup.

Now that Yosemite is in official release as of 10/17/14, do the crash problems still exist, or can I safely upgrade to Yosemite without using the workaround?

Apple fixed the bug in the betas of Yosemite that caused PM 5 to crash.  It should be safe to upgrade albeit with the caveat that there may be other bugs in the OS that no one yet knows about.  I personally wait for at least two point release updates before upgrading to any OS.  The risk is up to you.
